After hearing lots of good things about Kaya, I finally made it a point to try it out. They offer Caribbean-influenced cuisine and are located in Pittsburgh’s Strip District. Cutting directly to the chase, here’s the menu description of their burger:
Kaya Angus Burger: pickles, avocado, bacon, tomato, Manchego cheese, local sunny side up egg, secret Kaya sauce, Kaya chips – $12
At first, I didn’t know how I felt about having a sunny side up egg on a burger. I don’t even like sunny side up eggs to begin with, so I was hesitant to order the burger as-is, but I did anyway. I’m glad I did, because it’s fucking good.
Take a good look. The only possible complaint about this burger is perhaps the bun. It’s also important to note that the burger is built up vertically as opposed to others, making it very difficult to take a full bite. I would prefer the Angus patty to be thinner and wider, but it was cooked to absolute perfection, so whatever. If you’re wondering what that odd-looking brown glob of mystery is on the left of the plate… well that blob is supposedly a mound of “chips”. I don’t buy that those are, in fact, chips. They are more like the stuff found at the bottom of a fryer when you change the oil. And for further clarification, the sauce is the “secret Kaya sauce.” Now you know.
Burger Ratings:
Burger: 9
The Kaya Burger is awesome as fuck. It’s huge, ridiculously juicy, and full of flavor. Everything comes together nicely to create one hell of a burger.
Side: 4
I am really not into the concept of a “kaya chip”. Too over-cooked, too greasy. Do not want.
Environment: 8
The inside of Kaya is best described as “neat.” The decor is nice to look at and the overall ambiance is very pleasant.
Value: 6
For me, $12 is a bit much for a cheeseburger. In this case, the burger is well-worth the price but isn’t something I can eat on a regular basis. In completely unrelated website news, I’ll be setting up a Burger Review paypal account shortly.
I would probably argue that this is the best burger in Pittsburgh. If you’re in town and haven’t tried this burger yet, you’re missing out.
