Sanford’s Pub & Grub

While driving through the entirety of South Dakota and Wyoming, all I was concerned with was getting a good cheeseburger made from the beef of one of the many, many cows I passed along the highway.  When I actually tried to stop at one of the local restaurants, I had to find one that also served vegetarian items to satisfy my driving partner on this road trip. Most of the places we went past seemed to only serve bar food, so we settled on Sanford’s Pub & Grub in Rawlins, Wyoming.

The inside of the place is your standard “shit on the walls” type of place, but uniquely – the shit on the walls of this place just so happens to be that of a racist tone.  Additionally, most of the fellow patrons inside actually took a moment to turn around and glare at me as I was walking past them to my table.  I wasn’t wearing anything ridiculous or offensive, so I’m not too sure what that was all about.  I think it may have stemmed from my lack of cowboy boots, polished brass belt buckle, and 10-gallon hat.

After I placed my order for a cheeseburger and the “famous” onion rings, I immediately wished I had ordered it to-go instead.  This began what seemed like the longest wait ever, when really it may have been 10 minutes.

Sanford's Pub & Grub 1

This is one of those burgers where they don’t even bother to ask you how you want it cooked.  The kaiser roll was nicely toasted and lightly buttered. That’s about all I noticed before throwing it into a to-go box and blindly eating it in my car while driving.

Burger Ratings:

Burger:  6

The burger offered at Sanford’s is good.  The beef was overly seasoned, making me question the quality, but tasted surprisingly ok despite this.  It wasn’t great by any means, but when put together it was a decent cheeseburger.

Side: 8

Anytime a restaurant tags “famous” to any one of their items, I feel obligated to try it out.  The “famous” onion rings were an additional $.99, but they were well worth it.  They come with a side of some sort of cajun dipping sauce, and it’s really fucking good.

Environment: 0

I have never felt more uncomfortable in my entire life than sitting inside of Sandford’s Pub & Grub.  Not only is the place decorated with racist memorabilia, (there was a minstrel with a cut-out Obama photo affixed to the face staring at me the whole time I was eating) but the people inside also genuinely seemed to want me dead.

Value: 6

The cheeseburger and onion ring upgrade was a total of $9.99. I think this is a bit too expensive for what was offered, although the onion rings were worth the 99 cents.

i think one star is warranted when one feels physically threatened. how can you enjoy a burger feeling like it could be your last?

while those “famous” rings look pretty good (and notably similar to a certain “blooming onion”), 9.99 is too much for that.
