New Seasons Market is a Whole Foods-esque grocery store (think: the increasingly popular “local, sustainable, organic”/expensive tagline) with nine locations in the Portland metropolitan area.  They have a fairly impressive deli, complete with an online ordering component of their website.  It should be noted, however, that the one time I submitted an online order, my order was “lost” when I went in to pick it up, and had to wait the full amount of time anyway.

They offer traditional deli sandwiches as well as a hot wok, salad bar, a seasonal veggie-burger, and regular burgers. To order, you pick up an ordering pad of the type of food you’d like to order (Sandwich/Wok/Pasta/etc) and fill out the sheet.  You select your choice of bread (Baguette, Ciabatta Roll, French Roll, Hamburger Bun, Hot Dog Bun, Rye, Sourdough, Whole Wheat, or White), cheese (Cheddar, Cream Cheese, Havarti, Provolone, Swiss), vegetables (not listing these), and condiments.

I ordered a burger on a hamburger bun, with cheddar cheese, tomato, lettuce, and pesto-mayonnaise. There are no french fries or similar side items here, but there is a salad bar and bags of chips near the checkout.  After roughly 8 minutes, my order was called out. I paid for it, and then went over to the dining room to eat.

The burger:

Burger Ratings:

Burger: 7

The burger at New Seasons is pretty good. It was cooked a bit over Medium, but was still juicy, greasy, and tasty. The patty itself seemed like it was over-seasoned, almost to the point of tasting like a meatball, but overall it didn’t take too much away from it. The “hamburger bun” is a step up from what I was expecting, and was just about the perfect size for the patty.  The lettuce was crisp, and the pesto-mayonnaise was a nice added touch.

Side: n/a

Since the burger is a la carte, and there is no traditional side,  I guess I can’t hold them accountable for the bag of Kettle(tm) brand potato chips I picked up at the register.

Environment: 2

I don’t know what it is about the cafeteria at New Seasons, but every single time I have decided to eat there I’ve been annoyed and unable to enjoy my food.  My experience has either been tarnished by a large group of children celebrating a birthday, the weekly support group for the chronically-ill, or just screaming children in general.  I prefer to eat in peace, away from kids and invalids sneezing and coughing in a small poorly-ventilated cube of space. Although, if you don’t mind these things, you will probably be fine eating here.

Value: 8

A solid cheeseburger with unlimited toppings for $5.95 – excellent value!

Re: environment – you can eat outside until the evening, as well. Although admittedly, the views (parking lot on one side, a drab strip of SE Division on the other) from the tables aren't too great at the Seven Corners store. The weather's getting really nice these days, though!
